...because if you don't write it down, it will be lost forever.

Penrod climbed upon a barrel, stood on tiptoe,
grasped the rim of the box; then, using a knot-hole
as a stirrup, threw one leg over the top, drew himself
up, and dropped within.

Standing upon the packed sawdust, he was just tall enough to see over the top.

-----------

Why Penrod? All I can remember -- about books from my childhood -- is that Booth Tarkington's "Penrod" series were books that I read over and over again.

I don't really remember the stories, don't remember if Penrod was a childhood idol.

I do remember, however, that I liked the books and they, along with another "magic orange filter" book which I received when I had the measles, are high on my lis of rememberances.

Go figure!

Where to begin is easy...albeit it was nearly 50 years ago. It all started at Xerox Corporation's Education Group headquarters in Stamford. Linda was secretary to my then Boss Jack Hough. We along with a few others, were the Internal Communications department. It was a day when Linda was sitting in for the Lobby receptionist that I saw, from a card on her desk, that it was her birthday -- July 10. As it turns out, I share the same birth day (not the year, I was 15 years her senior). It was that "coincidence" that prompted a first "date" followed by another, another, and "going steady" In less than a year (we were both married -- to others -- but separated, at the time). Throwing caution to the wind, we flew to Mexico, each obtaining a legal divorce, flew home where I, almost immediately thereafter, formally asked her Father for Linda's hand in marriage. He, in his infinite wisdom and faithful to his religion, had but one request, that "we promise to bring any children we may be blessed to have, be brought up in a religious home" -- the choice being ours. To that we promised and Linda helped us determine that Judaism, the religion of my birth, would be our mutual choice.
